In S1E19 or S1E20 you say that there are only 3 scenarios for debris without barnacles:
(1) the piece just entered the water
(2) the barnacles were eaten at sea (but according to you and your experts, this is a very rare and improbable scenario)
(3) the barnacles were eaten after the piece beached
My questions to you:
(A) What animal eats barnacles on the shore ?
(B) How do the barnacle shells disappear ? Whatever animal will eat the flesh, but not the shells, right ?
Thanks for the question, Peter. To be honest no one has ever studied the question of what animals eat Lepas when ashore, but I imagine it could be just about anything. Crabs, seabirds and rodents would all be plausible candidates. As for whether the shells disappear, by guess would be that they get scattered and become part of the general marine detritus that for instance makes up beach sand.
